The Age of Bubble Wrap

  • Feb 12

Evolution didn't have her hands in this.

Society as a whole did.

Padded corners.

Trigger warnings.

Instruction manuals that warn you coffee is hot.

Resilience traded in for reassurance.

Then slapped with a label and sold back to us as progress.

Kindness isn't the problem.

Being fragile is.

When Common Sense Was Replaced by Labels

Look at a vehicle manual today.

Page after page warning you not to touch, not to adjust, not to attempt.

"Authorized personnel only."

"Risk of injury."

"Consult a professional."

Years ago, people changed their own oil.

Fixed belts.

Learned by trial, error, and scraped knuckles.

Now, learning has been outsourced.

Responsibility has been removed "for your safety."

And competence died quietly in the process.

The Softening Started Early

It didn't begin with adults.

It started with children.

Parents stopped letting kids fall of bikes.

Stopped letting them scrape knees.

Stopped letting failure teach its lessons.

Every stumble was intercepted.

Every discomfort prevented.

Every consequence softened.

But falling is how balance is learned.

Scraped knees are how limits are understood.

Failure is how resilience is built.

You don't raise strong adults by shielding children from gravity.

Participation Isn't Achievement

Then came the trophies.

Everyone wins.

Everyone is special.

No one loses.

Except that's not how reality works.

There are winners.

There are losers.

And losing is not a moral failing. It's a lesson.

If you don't try, you don't deserve the reward.

If you fail, you learn or repeat it.

Handing everything out doesn't create confidence.

It creates entitlement with no foundation.

The Disappearance of Work Ethic

Effort used to mean something.

Now, everything is expected to be immediate.

Comfortable.

Guaranteed.

People want results without process.

Respect without consistency.

Success without sacrifice.

Work ethic wasn't taken.

It was slowly replaced with expectation.

Mental Health as an Escape Hatch

Mental health matters.

That needs to be said clearly.

But it's now being used as a universal excuse.

A shield against responsibility.

A way to avoid growth.

And here's the cruel irony:

When everything is labeled mental health,

those who truly struggle get ignored.

Real issues get drowned out by performative fragility.

Support becomes diluted.

And accountability disappears entirely.

Struggle is real.

But so is effort.

And one doesn't cancel the other.

What we Loss

In the name of protection, we lost:

Thicker skin.

Problem-solving skills.

Emotional regulation.

The ability to hear "no" and survive it.

We didn't make people kinder.

We made the brittle.

This isn't about cruelty.

It's about capability.

A world that removes friction doesn't create peace.

It creates people who shatter the moment life pushes back.

Comfort feels good.

But it has never made anyone strong.

Until Next week...
